The Return of the Hippo

Finished a promo for Richard Kruger and Bronwyn Berry on THE RETURN OF THE HIPPO

The Hippopotamus -- powerful, massive and potentially dangerous
This mighty mammal has gradually been eradicated from the Zambezi River in North Western Zambia. This has put the eco-system in danger and the livelihood of the local community at risk. Peter Fisher, a dedicated game reserve manager who grew up in this area, has accepted the dangerous mission to move a pod of eight Hippo 494 miles (795 km) in an attempt to restore the eco-system to it's former glory.

FEARLESS ENCOUNTERS
A new documentary film, Honoring the Kuwaiti Oil Firefighting team. The film was never edited or released until 2011. Shot 20 years ago by the Kuwaiti filmmaker, Talal Showaish-Salem , who spent 6 weeks with the team ,in the horrific inferno . Telling the inside untold story of the Kuwaiti oil firefighter's heroic Fearless Encounters . when the Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein was forced out of Kuwait by the world Coalition forces in February 1991, out of spite and hatred he ordered his defeated retreating army to Blow up all of Kuwait's Oil wells. More than 650 Oil wells ,where on fire for 8 months, burning on average 6 million Barrels of Oil P/Day. In total, more than 1 Billion Barrels of Crude oil was burnt. The Kuwaiti firefighting team started 180 days after the main 4 world famous, American and Canadian oil firefighting teams. the Kuwaiti Team overwhelmed the world by their unmatched speed in killing the fiercest oil well fires, reaching temperatures of 2000C . Against all bets, the Kuwaitis, managed to Extinguish the biggest well in Kuwait BG160, which was burning 60,000 Barrels of oil per day. Their speed and relentless enthusiasm, they ignited the competitive spirit amongst all the other firefighting teams, which lead to extinguishing all the fires in 7 months only, compared to the initial world expert predictions of 5 years.

In transit

Today I'm pottering around... Seems like for every productive day (yesterday) there is a counter of non productive day(s) following! Why on earth?
Well, at least I managed to get some funding applications in for the Brittdoc.Puma.Catalyst award.... and I did some filing...and viewed some footage....

Just kinda feel like a 'non-working' day if I didn't shoot or edit or write....
Mmmmm....

On with it now... will be uploading some old files, films, footage and general fun stuff that I've worked on in the past, which feels like 'my previous life' at this point....

Let's go.... off with her head if she can't produce something..... not much left of this beautiful, sunny day.

flash mob in PE... awesome

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is putting Nelson Mandela Bay on the map thanks to its successful staging of a flash mob in the city, with video footage that has now gone viral.
The international award-winning NMMU choir gave an impromptu performance of popular songs to the delight of unsuspecting shoppers at Greenacres Shopping Centre that is now being shared around the globe, thanks to a posting on You Tube.
Though staged to promote the closing date for undergraduate studies at the institution in 2012, the viral marketing of the song-and-dance routine has much wider benefits – like that of simply promoting both NMMU and Nelson Mandela Bay generally.
“This five-minute video takes us to places we have never been, and introduces us to audiences who might never have heard of us,” says NMMU’s Marketing and Corporate Relations Director Pieter Swart.
“It certainly profiles us – and the city – as a go-getting, fun place to be.”
The university is hoping to receive a million hits on You Tube.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iIFqHMOE1g

Beep!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7VbiKEja1o

Something I edited YONKS ago for Eddie Edwards! Also edited his first 2 documentaries; The Black - about South African musicians living next to the Black River in Cape Town and The Fight - following a boxer's rise to fame.

Glitterboys & Ganglands

What a nice project this was. I had the opportunity to work with Lauren Beukes. Earlier this year (2011) she won the Arthur Clarke award for Science Fiction in London!
I had so much fun editing this doccie with a great team, Dene Mcleod - fab assistant editor, running to the bottle store when I needed a pick me upper. William Patterson - finding music and eating veggie food with me, while the rest had their McDonalds! And Matthew Brown - who edited the night shift and created the most beautiful sequence with the girls onstage.

Showing at MOMA in New York

Small film I've edited with Mark Kaplan, for architect Jo Noero on some of his great South African work!
